Microsoft is retiring PTE uploads from Extension Management

Until now, per-tenant extensions (PTEs) for Business Central online were uploaded from the Extension Management page of each environment or by scripts calling the Automation API extensionUpload endpoint, and many deployment scripts and tools still rely on them. Microsoft has deprecated both paths and plans to remove them in 2027 release wave 1. Since July 2026, the Business Central Admin Center and its API can upload, install, schedule and uninstall PTEs, and Microsoft recommends them as the way to do it. PTE Deploy brings that supported path, the Admin Center API pteInstall endpoint, into the editor where you already build your AL apps, and shows you in one view which version each customer runs.

What PTE Deploy does

Deploy Current App

From your AL project, PTE Deploy finds the .app package that matches app.json, warns you when it is older than your code and builds it with AL: Package if needed. Before uploading anything it checks the target: same version already installed, lower version, missing dependencies and environment state. You pick the environment, when to install (now, in its update window or with the next Business Central update) and the sync mode, and confirm once.

All your customers in one view

Register your customers' tenants by domain or ID, with aliases, groups and favorites. For each one you see its environments, with Production highlighted, the installed extensions, scheduled installs and recent operations. From the same tree you open the environment or the Admin Center, copy IDs, uninstall an extension or cancel a scheduled install.

Which version each customer runs

Scan All Tenants looks for your app in every registered tenant and environment and marks, environment by environment, whether it has the same version as your project, an older one, a newer one or none. The Fleet Report sums it up in a matrix, with the scheduled installs, as a Markdown document you can save or share.

Production, with a safety net

In Production, deploying always asks for an explicit confirmation with the environment name typed in, and so do uninstalling and deleting data. PTE Deploy stops before uploading what Business Central would reject: a version that is already installed or lower, a package over 50 MB or a DEV extension with the same ID in the environment.

Every operation, to the end

Each deployment is followed until it succeeds or fails, even if you close VS Code: when you come back, a summary tells you what happened while you were away. If it fails, you see the actual Business Central message with a suggested fix, and Copy Diagnostics prepares a support report without tokens. You can also follow operations started from another machine or from the Admin Center.

No backend, no secrets

You sign in with your Microsoft account from VS Code, the same one you use for the Admin Center: in the customer's organization, as a guest or as a GDAP partner. There are no apps with secrets to maintain and no servers in between: the extension only talks to Microsoft Entra ID and the Admin Center API, sends no telemetry and keeps your tenant list in your VS Code. If your organization prefers, it can use its own Entra app.

Getting started

1. Install the extension

Search for “PTE Deploy” in the VS Code Extensions view or install it from the Marketplace. It is free.

2. Sign in and add your tenants

In the PTE Deploy view, sign in with your Microsoft account and add your customers' tenants by domain or ID. If a tenant has not consented to the app yet, the extension prepares the link for its administrator.

3. Deploy from your AL project

Run PTE Deploy: Deploy Current App from the Command Palette, the Workspace view or the Status Bar, pick the environment and confirm. The Operations view follows the deployment until it finishes.

Requirements: Business Central online (on-premises is not supported); in each tenant, an account with access to the Business Central Admin Center, for example with the Dynamics 365 Business Central Administrator role or as a GDAP partner; VS Code 1.106 or later and, to build from the editor, the AL Language extension.

Frequently asked questions

Nothing. PTE Deploy is free and installs from the VS Code Marketplace or Open VSX. It is currently published as a pre-release (beta).

No. PTE Deploy uses the Business Central Admin Center API, which only exists for Business Central online.

Access to the Business Central Admin Center: for example the Dynamics 365 Business Central Administrator role, or delegated access as a GDAP partner. No permissions are needed inside the environment. The first time, a tenant administrator may have to consent to the app; PTE Deploy prepares the link to ask for it.

No. Tokens are handled by VS Code's built-in Microsoft authentication and are never written to logs. PTE Deploy has no server of its own, sends no telemetry and keeps your tenant list in your VS Code.

No. PTE Deploy covers interactive deployment from the editor and the view across all your customers; unattended deployments stay in your pipeline. Note that if your pipeline uploads PTEs with the Automation API, it will need to move to the Admin Center API before 2027 release wave 1.

In the Q&A tab of the PTE Deploy page on the Marketplace or through the contact form on this page. If something fails, Copy Diagnostics prepares a report without tokens that you can paste into your message.
